Who is responsible for the swimming pool filter when renting a home?
Q. We moved into our rental home in December 2008. Our home has an in-ground swimming pool. We had the pool professionally opened on May 7th. The pool company said the filter is broken and needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the filter and having it installed is $1300. I contacted the home owner and she said they don't have the money to replace the filter at this time. Who is responsible for replacing the swimming pool filter? I also wanted to know if it would be OK to deduct $1300 from next months rent to pay for the filter?

A. Pool maintenance usually falls on the tenant. You are going to need to read your lease to figure out who pays for this. Most likely it is you, but your lease may state otherwise.

How does a swimming pool salt ionizer work?
Q. A friend of mine has a "saltwater" swimming pool, it does not require the addition of any chlorine. Does anyone know how the chemistry of the ionizer works, ie how does it convert simple NaCl to hypochlorite? Is the chlorine level in this type of pool lower than a chlorinated pool? Is the level of Chlorine gas lower?
Asked by atomicdoug171 - Fri Aug 15 23:24:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. To start off with, chlorine is a salt. All that a salt water generator does is convert salt, by a form of electrolysis via a cell in the plumbing, into a low constant dose of chlorine gas that dissolves in the pool water to become sodium hypochlorite. The cell looks like the plates in a lead acid car battery. Water flows between the plates and an electric current passes between the plates. Gas forms on the plates and dissolves into the pool water return. Generally, yes, the chlorine is a little lower than in a traditionally chlorinated pool because it is constant dose. It doesn't have the spikes in levels. Often there's no need to even put the units into their 100% output or "shock" setting. By chlorine gas, I'm assuming you mean… [cont.]

Can anyone make water spiral threw an automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes?
Q. My question is can you make the water in your automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes spiral. Speeding up water flow, greater suction power, faster automatic swimming pool cleaner, a turning force is created on the swimming pool pipes. The automatic swimming pool cleaner will be able to turn itself out of tight spots.

A. Try a Hayward Navigator, it turns itself out of steps and ledges and spends more time cleaning the pool! You're welcome!!

A. It sounds like your pool Pump is not working. How old is your pool? I have owned an above ground pool and an inground pool and one thing i have learned about them both is, if you are maintaining Chemicals correctly and its still not cleaning, your pump is gone..I have also found out that an Automatic Chlorinator is the best thing you can buy for your swimming pool. Once a week all you do is add the Chemicals, usually the tablets, and it will do the rest for you. I had to hardly do any cleaning after I had it installed.

How do you get custard out of a swimming pool ?
Q. On Brainiac a while back they filled up a swimming pool with 'custard' in order to prove that it was possible to walk on a non-Newtonian liquid - all you have to do is keep walking. But how did they ever get the 'custard' (it wasn't stuff you could eat) out of the pool afterwards ? Or is it still there ? Is there a pool somewhere in England that will be forever full of custard ?

A. Use sponge fingers - although this may be a 'trifle' difficult.

I want to convert a large chlorinated swimming pool into a pool for fish. Will ammonia work?
Q. I've heard that ammonia will neutralize the chlorine, and I think that's what people use to treat tap water for fishtanks. But are there other chemicals in swimming pool water? Also, how much ammonia (or whatever chemical) do I need to use? The type of fish doesn't matter--it can be any species. I just don't want them to die.
Asked by Fish Lady - Wed Apr 2 01:05:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As one previous poster has said, you can let your pool water just sit, the chlorine will dissapate over time, especially in sunny conditions.. it may take a week or 2 weeks or longer... it all depends on the situation. Test your pool water often to check the chlorine levels. You can go to a pool store, and you can buy a chlorine neutralizer. however you might spend a little money for this, as if you have a large 3000 gallon pool, it may take a few containers of the chemical. Even after getting a zero reading on the chlorine, i would still wait a week or 10 days after this to make sure that the chlorine is completely dissapated.

Swimming pool is leaking around pressure Gage, How do I fix?
Q. i have a above ground swimming pool with a sand filter. I was getting it ready for the season. When I turned on the pump water began coming out from the gage attached to the filter. A. Just replace the guage, real inexpensive, and when putting the new one on, make sure you use some teflon tape, which will only cost you like 49 cents for a roll of it at the hardware store.

This is a critical step for your own financial protection. In the US, or at least here in Southern California, there are a couple of Private Groups that certify home pools for private swimming instruction. The most prominent of these is the YMCA. How can I get my swimming pool water clean?
Q. My pool was green and I went to a swimming pool store and I they told me to put acid, to shock it, and put in some stuff to kill the green in the pool. I did all of this and my pool has no green anymore but the water is not clear. I cannot see the bottom of the pool. What do I have to do to get it clear? The water is cloudy blue.
Asked by geju - Mon Apr 20 15:03:19 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Cloudy swimming pool water can result from one of several factors: the pH is too high; the total alkalinity level is too high; the stabiliser level is too high; the chlorine level is too low; the calcium hardness level is too high; the level of total dissolved solids is too high; there are high levels of metals (discoloured pool water); there is a lot of pool algae growth; the filter needs cleaning or servicing; there is a large quantity of microscopic particles in the pool water. Use a test kit to see what chemicals you need to put into your pool.

A. It's a very expensive proposition. First, you'll need the cooperation of a specialized pool contractor and also tile contractor- and both need to know what is being built and cooperate as best as they are able. The substrate- what the slate will adhere to is either going to have to be somewhat flexible or extra rigid- as a tile person I cannot say which. As for the tile mortar, regular polyblend white or grey should be fine- they are both rated for uderwater even though material safety data sheets do not reflect this. You will need many gallons of the flex additive, which can also be diluted with White Lightning brand 40 year caulk. Alternately you can use epoxy mortar, but this is extremely expensive. A. well..you should'nt have to clean it everyday-sounds like its too small...a filter can be acid washed to remove oils its still good as long as the material is not frayed...some last 4-5 years for the larger sizes:

How much does it cost to replace a swimming pool key?
Q. I accidently broke my buddy's swimming pool key? How much would it cost to replace it? He lives in an apartment, if that helps.

A. Probably a couple of bucks although the landlord will probably replace it without charge.
