What would it take for pipes to burst in an older building?
Q. I live in a building (house split into 4 apartments) that has alot of older stuff in it. The pipes I would assume are from when the house was built. I'd like to know from a professional plumber or tradesman who works with piping how cold it has to be for pipes to burst? For 50 year old pipes how much pressure as far as the colder temperatures go would it take for them to burst? These pipes are about 40 to 80 feet inside the house also.

A. Currently I am working with pipes that are ninety years old and they are failing due to being buried. In order for your pipes to burst the temp would have to be freezing and even then that's no guarantee that they would burst. Given that there are four units the water is probably constantly being used and would be unable to freeze. If they were to freeze to the point of bursting, it would probably have to be an outdoor pipe.

Q. What is the law with selling tobacco pipes at concert venues? I wanted to start a tobacco shop, and decided I needed some money to start the shop, so I thought it would be a good idea to follow some of my favorite bands and sell these pipes at their concerts, I understand I would have to run the idea by whoever is hosting the concerts , but besides that, what are the laws conserning this? Would I need a tobacco license to do this? Could I go under the radar and do it as a side thing? What to do?

A. You would need a license from wherever you are but there should not be any restrictions other than a city license, but all laws are state sensitive so you would need to check with each state and each city you go to.~

How can I keep my pipes from getting clogged with laundry lint?
Q. We used to have a washing machine where the rubber drain hose let the water out in a laundry tub. We kept a lint catcher or even a piece of nylon hose over the end and it caught quite a bit of lint before it could get into the household drain pipes. Now we have a washing machine which has the rubber drain hose going right into a pipe on the wall behind the machine. Do they sell lint catchers to attach at the end of that hose or some contraption to keep the plumbing from getting clogged or isn't that a concern when the drain hose goes directly into a pipe? I'm afraid that nylon hose would be pretty disgusting hanging directly in the pipe and would need to be removed several times per week. Does anyone have a solution?

A. My washing machine has a lint catching, plastic toothed gizmo which traps and lint when the water is recycled in the wash and rinsed cycles. Maybe you can configure something in yours or it may even have one that you don't know is there. Mine is removable so that the lint can be cleaned.
