What is a makeup air filter inside the normal air filter that I am supposed to replace?
Q. I drive an '04 Dodge SRT-4. In the manual under maintenance schedules it says both to replace the engine air cleaner filter and it also says to "Inspect and replace, if required, the the make-up air filter (located inside the air cleaner)" What is the Make-up air filter? I replaced the main air filter and looked inside of it but there was no other filter inside of it.

What is the best air filter that you can buy?
Q. I'm having to change my air filter every 2 or 3 weeks. My townhome is about 1200 square feet, but I don't understand why I have to change the filters so often. I have tried the air filters that are about $20 for one, and the cheaper ones that are $15 for 3. The $20 filter lasted about a week longer than the others, but for the cost it doesn't really add up. Home depot sells an air filter that costs $100, and it's suppose to be for 30 years or something. Anyway, what's the best air filter that I can buy?

A. In the past 7 years I have never seen a $100.00 filter at the HD. But to answer you question on the effectiveness on the filters, which by the way should be changes every 90 days, the spun fiber glass is the cheapest and worst filter you can buy. One way to see for yourself is to take baby powder and sprinkle it over the filter, just about all the powder fall through. With the 3 for $15.00, naturalaire filters, they fare better in stopping the talc powder. The best would be the 3M Electrostatic filters. Take a look at the MERV rating on your filters when you buy them. If you are asthmatic or have severe allergies, I would recommend the 3M filters, otherwise the Naturalaire filters work just fine. By the way I use the naturalaire. Edit: An… [cont.]

When my pool filter is set to filter air blows out one of the jets?
Q. Trying to open the swimming pool. We filled the basket with water and set the filter to backwash, rinse, and then filter. When it got to filter, it only blew air out one of the 2 jets. What's going on? It doesn't look like any water is running through the plastic window of the pump. Is it possible I have a leak in the pipes? How can I tell?

A. First make sure the pool is full of water. If the watery level is not high to fill the skinners, then you get no water to the pump. Sounds like you pump has lost it's prime. Take the cover off the strainer basket by the pump, make sure there are no leaves in the chamber, (be sure to check where the chamber actually drains into the pump) and fill the chamber with water. Then replace the cover while making sure the cover has a good gasket and that it makes a good seal. Turn on the pump and let it run 1-2 minutes. You might need to try this 4-5 times. If none of this works, you either have a leak in the pump seal, the chamber that holds the basket by the pump, or in a line running from the pool to the pump. This leak is letting the pump… [cont.]

How do I filter the sand for my aquarium?
Q. The instructions leaflet for the aquarium set-up advise me to 'filter' my sand before I place it in the tank. I googled on how to do this but it just came up with filters that I could buy. But I already have a filter, so does it mean to just leave the filter running on the sand for a few days beforehand or what? Help, please! :) Neeeddd heeelp...

A. There are many different types of sand and gravel, but it is always good to wash/rinse it before putting it in the tank-putting it in a bowl or bucket, and running water through it, agitating it, with your hands or stirrer, and and pouring off the dirty water, and repeating until the water runs clean. I don't know what they mean by filtering it, (although of course I know what filtering means). Is it possible that the aquarium was not made in the US or an english speaking country? if so often instruction translations are often not very good, and "filter" could easily be translated as "clean" or "rinse". You could use your filter as you said, but it would not be an efficient way of cleaning the actual sand.

How long to set filter time on Thermostat?
Q. Does anyone how many hours I should set my filter warning thing on my new electronic thermostat? It's made to give me a notice of when I should change my furnace filter. It can be set from 0 to 1950 hours in 50 hour increments. I just changed my filter now. Thanks for all the help. I used a normal 16" x 25 " gas furnace filter.

A. The thermostat is keeping up with the "run time" so the other answer is on the right track but forgot to put in a multiplier to correct for average run time. I use 60% when I set filter timers 30 days X 24 hours=720X .6 (60%) =432 hours

What is the best filter for a turtle tank?
Q. I have a small yellow-bellied slider and a 10-gallon tank. I have a Duetto 100 submersible filter. I know a canister filter is the way to go but for a small turtle? Does anyone have a suggestion like getting a small canister filter to go a long with the submersible filter?

A. Go to a reputable fish store and ask an associate. I would not suggest Walmart. A petco, petsmart is okay, but privately owned pet stores are usually better, very helpful.

How to fix a leaky water filter?
Q. I have an Everpure H104 water filter installed under my sink that the previous owners installed. Has worked great so far. Changed the filter a year or so ago with no problems. Just swapped in a new filter, and the new one leaks. It seems like the impact of the water when I am done filling my glass forces a few drops out of the top somewhere. I've placed a pan under it for now, but am going to tackle it again this weekend. Anyone have this happen to them and want to share their experience? I have the 800 number from Everpure.com but am curious to hear your experience with your filter, especially fixing a leaky filter. Thanks!

A. care full attention must be taken when closing the filter after filter medium replacement , u just need to replace the rubber "O" ring , the previous one is already become unusable of there would be miss fitting of the ring while closing / righting , purchase a new rubber O ring or proper size rubber Gasket. u may also use Teflon PTFE for this , but rubber is best, available from every big hardware shop

What type of filter for 10 gallon fish tank?
Q. So from answers of other questions I've asked on here, people told me that I can only have sand in my fish tank if I have a certain kind of filter. I have a 10 gallon empty fish tank and I want sand instead of gravel because it looks so much nicer and natural. I'm wondering how do I know if my filter will work with sand or not? The filter I have with it came with the tank in a kit. I did have gravel and my fish would always eat that too.

A. All my tanks are with sand and -i have no problems with the filter. You can put a piece of driftwood below the suction hose to prevent the filter from sucking to much sand in. (I hope you understood waht i mean /I'm German and my English is far from perfect ) edit yes the first poster is right , you can't use sand with an undergravel filter.

How do you determine when a furnace filter needs to be replaced?
Q. I am investigating using the pleated filters in my furnace. The problem with any filter is knowing when to replace them. Most tell you how long they should be in the furnace before replacement. It seems to me a better method would be to measure the low pressure on the blower side of the filter. As the filter becomes plugged the pressure would go down while running. Does anyone know of a device to do this or does anyone know how I can determine what the maximum pressure drop should be across a filter when it needs to be replaced?
Asked by chuck_lieber - Thu Oct 23 17:31:51 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Filters are to be replaced at the least every other month. It really depends on the area you live in. The type of filter you use makes a difference also. If air cant travel through it due to the millions of dust bunnies and particles that have been trapped...then its time to change it. Be careful with the pleated filters. They come in different densities so be careful not to get one of those 1200 's which is very dense. True the higher the number the more particles it will catch. but at what price ? Try this : while the furnace is operating take note of the sound of the air movement. if when you remove the filter (if possible without having to leave the cover off) there's a significant release of air pressure, then the filter is too… [cont.]

Q. Thinking of starting up a small planted aquarium and I was wondering what a good filter would be. I don't want an internal filter 'cause it takes up too much room, no under gravel because I know that's bad, I don't mind a hang-on-the-back but will it create too much movement? Who is responsible for the swimming pool filter when renting a home?
Q. We moved into our rental home in December 2008. Our home has an in-ground swimming pool. We had the pool professionally opened on May 7th. The pool company said the filter is broken and needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the filter and having it installed is $1300. I contacted the home owner and she said they don't have the money to replace the filter at this time. Who is responsible for replacing the swimming pool filter? A. Pool maintenance usually falls on the tenant. You are going to need to read your lease to figure out who pays for this. Most likely it is you, but your lease may state otherwise.

Will the filter filter out plant fertilizer?
Q. I have a filter that has activated carbon and I was planning to buy some fertilizer for my plants. I was wondering if the filter (bag + sponge) + the carbon will filter out the fertilizer. If yes, will a filter running without activated be less effective than one with carbon in it?
Asked by The One and Only One - Mon Aug 20 12:46:40 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's possible that the carbon will remove some of the iron and trace elements from the fertilizer, especially if you use a liquid type. Depending on the types of plants you have (and how they get their nutrients, from the roots or leaves), there are also pelleted fertilizers you bury at the plant roots which would be less affected by the carbon. If you use a fertilizer (and usually only trace elements are necessary, and only at around 1/4 the suggested amount - the fish and their wastes produce most of the nitrate and phosphate needed unless you have a heavily planted tank and run CO2) you can run the tank without the carbon. Q. I have a filter that has activated carbon and I was planning to buy some fertilizer for my plants. I was wondering if the filter (bag + sponge) + the carbon will filter out the fertilizer. If yes, will a filter running without activated be less effective than one with carbon in it?

I only use carbon in tanks where I need to remove medications or if there are fish or corals that may produce… [cont.]

How to put together an undergravel filter?
Q. Please help us we are trying to get an aquarium filter. There are no holes linking the tubes and the underground. Does the filter sit under the tray and the hose go up the tube or does the hose sit at the bottom and the filter stay at the top?

where is fuel filter located for a 1973 international scout located?
Q. Just got my first Scout II 4x4 and LOVIN IT! I am replacing all general fluids, greases and filters but I can't find nor do I know how to replace fuel filter? Also am looking for some nice looking roll bars at an economic price? Any ideas?

A. If fitted with an in-line filter, it is usually inside the left side frame rail near the transmission. If not, then the only one is in the inlet of the carb.

How can I tell if the filter stream is too strong for my aquarium?
Q. I have a Whisper 20-gallon in-tank filter for my ten gallon tank (passed on from old turtle tank), which houses some juvenile and adult guppies. When I turn the filter on it looks like they have to swim to keep away from it...they don't get sucked in but they don't look too happy either. They're constantly wiggling harder than when it's off (they look relaxed when it's off). They'll be moved to a bigger tank next week, but as for right now, how can I tell whether or not they have to fight too hard to swim away from the filter? I'm going out of town for a week so I can't leave it on during the day and turn it off at night.

A. Usually when people get new tanks and filter its usually required to upgrade but 2x the gallon because of bioload but i would go for a filter meant for a tank that is standard like 5gallon tank with a 5 gallon made filter and keep that up to a 15gallon tank with a 15gallon made filter. But when it hit 20gallons thats when you upgrade it to make a 20 or 29 gallon tank with a 30-60 gallon made filter and use the 20gallon made filter as a back-up. So you can get a 10gallon made filter or simply get a 20gallon tank. Its your option Hope this info helps WT

What home water filter system is the best for removing chlorine and flouride?
Q. I am looking for a water filter to put on my sink faucet. Does anyone know what filter is the best for removing chemicals, especially chlorine and flouride?
Asked by lilsheep - Mon Jul 20 15:44:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The absolute best system is the eSpring system and is a purification system, not a filter. It is the highest rated system on the market and only a distillery can get water cleaner. It not only is much, much better than a basic filter such as Britta or Pur but by year two is actually cheaper too. Fluoride however will not be removed. It is not considered a contaminate so no home filter or purification system will remove it. The only thing that removes fluoride is a distillery. They are very expensive to buy and run, and are messy to maintain. RCA
