Bromine (pronounced /ˈbroʊmiːn/ BROH-meen or /ˈbroʊmɨn/ BROH-min; from Greek: βρῶμος, brómos, meaning "stench (of he-goats)"), is a chemical element with the symbol Br and atomic number 35. A halogen element, it is, along with mercury, the only strictly liquid element at room temperature, but cesium, rubidium, francium and gallium are quite close. Bromine vapors are corrosive and toxic. Approximately 556,000 metric tons were produced in 2007. The main applications for bromine are in fire retardants and fine chemicals. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Bromine" Why is bromine a liquid and fluorine a gas? Q. Really need help with this, don't particularly get it... Fluorine, F , is a gas, and Bromine, Br , is a liquid at room temperature. Discuss the different states of these elements at room temperature. Please include in your answer information on particle separation, energy, particle motion and the attractive forces between the particles. Asked by R S - Wed Dec 19 21:14:40 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Bromine simply has more electrons than fluorine, so there is more chance of there being a polar imbalance, thus resulting in stronger dispersion forces between molecules. To become a gas, a substance must break these combined Van Der Waals forces, so if the forces are stronger, it requires more energy to break them. Bromine is a liquid because room temperature is not hot enough to overcome the strong dispersion forces. This also accounts for the fact that iodine is solid at room temperature. Answered by Stormy - Tue Jan 26 17:45:14 2010 What is the atomic mass of bromine isotope?
Q. there are two different isotopes of bromine atom. Under normal conditions, elemental bromine consists of Br2 molecules and the mass of a bromine molecule is the sum of the two atoms in the molecule. The mass spectrum of bromine consists of three peaks: Mass(amu) Peaks Relative Size 157.836 0.2569 159.834 0.4999 161.832 0.2431 a)What is the isotopic composition of each peak? b)What is the atomic mass of each isotope? c)Determine the average mass of Br2 molecule. d)Determine the average atomic mass of a bromine atom. e)What is the percent abundance of the two isotopes? Please help!!! I am so confused... Asked by yvonll - Mon May 7 23:52:02 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since all the bromine molecules are diatomic, the masses can be had by just dividing the molecular weigts by 2. So the atomic masses must be 79 and 81. The average mass would be (157.836 x 0.2569 + 159.834 x 0.4999 + 161.832 x 0.2431)/2. The isotopes will be present in almost equal quantities, with the lighter one a bit more.
