A swimming pool, swimming bath, wading pool, or simply a pool, is an artificially enclosed body of water intended for swimming or water-based recreation. There are many standard sizes; the largest and deepest is the Olympic size. A pool can be built either above or in the ground, and from materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass or concrete.

Pools that may be used by many people or by the general public are called public, while pools used exclusively by a few people or in a home are called private. Many health clubs, fitness centers and private clubs have public pools used mostly for exercise. Many hotels and massage parlors have public pools for relaxation. Hot tubs and spas are pools with hot water, used for relaxation or therapy, and are common in homes, hotels, clubs and massage parlors. Swimming pools are also used for diving, other sports, and training of lifeguards and astronauts.

Pools must be sanitized to prevent growth and spread of bacteria, viruses, algae and insect larvae that can cause disease. This is done by using filters, ensuring pools have adequate flow rate and chemical disinfectants such as chlorine, bromine or mineral sanitizers. As the adverse effects of chemical disinfection on health and the environment become known, healthier, ECO friendly alternatives are sought.

How do I kill the algae in my swimming pool?
Q. My pool is a 4000 gallon (20X40 feet) below ground swimming pool. It has poor circulation and it is very green. I just bought the house and I have been trying to kill the algae for about a month. The pump sucks from the skimmer, but not from the bottom drain. There are two water jets that feed water into the pool at opposite corners of the pool. Help!

A. What is your water chemistry? Take a sample of water (about a pint) down to the local pool store and have them run a full spectrum analysis on it. Make sure they test for Total chlorine Free chlorine Combined chlorine pH Alkalinity Hardness Cyanuric acid Total dissolved solids Metals Phosphates Bring these results back and post them here or email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and we'll get you straightened back out. Don't purchase anything from the pool store when you have the water tested. Sometimes their recommendations aren't spot on for your exact pool. Please include the material the pool is made of (vinyl or concrete/plaster), filtration system, chlorination system, chemicals used in the pool in the last two weeks, and any… [cont.]

I want to convert a large chlorinated swimming pool into a pool for fish. Will ammonia work?
Q. I've heard that ammonia will neutralize the chlorine, and I think that's what people use to treat tap water for fishtanks. But are there other chemicals in swimming pool water? Also, how much ammonia (or whatever chemical) do I need to use? The type of fish doesn't matter--it can be any species. I just don't want them to die.

A. As one previous poster has said, you can let your pool water just sit, the chlorine will dissapate over time, especially in sunny conditions.. it may take a week or 2 weeks or longer... it all depends on the situation. Test your pool water often to check the chlorine levels. You can go to a pool store, and you can buy a chlorine neutralizer. however you might spend a little money for this, as if you have a large 3000 gallon pool, it may take a few containers of the chemical. Even after getting a zero reading on the chlorine, i would still wait a week or 10 days after this to make sure that the chlorine is completely dissapated.

How much does it cost to run a backyard swimming pool?
Q. I want to buy a house with a swimming pool. Its in a climate that does not need a heater. Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to run a pool on a monthly basis: water, cleaning, water filtration system.

A. I assume this pool is an inground pool? what are the dimensions? How many gallons is the pool? Once you know the answer to those three questions contact a pool store in your local area. Ask someone there if they might know. Also contact the water department. Compare the cost of the water prior summer season to swim season, the mua will give you this information to you. Contact the utilities company compare the rate of electric used during the peak season months. Hope that was helpful...
